How do I find out whether my phone can be used as a htpc's remote control?

I have a Nokia 6700 Classic, and a laptop. So far I've managed to transfer files between them, and share the phone's internet connection, over bluetooth. I'm now considering a HTPC remote control, of which there are many IR choices and a few bluetooth ones.

So, it seems possible that I can install something based on java on my phone which will allow me to do basic things like choose what avi file I'd like the laptop to play, and control the volume. I don't mind whether the htpc/laptop needs to be running windows or linux.

Unfortunately I am particularly ignorant when it comes to mobile phones. I assume there are various important standards, to which my phone must conform for the above to be possible. I don't know what these standards are however, nor how I might find out about them.

So, I would appreciate a push in the right direction. SSH using a mobile phone does not sound like great fun, so I'm hoping for a gui.

Many thanks in advance :)

edit: Answer seems to be maybe. The software "Remuco" has worked twice in the last two hours. At least one of my laptop, my phone, and remuco itself is infuriatingly buggy. I don't know how to work out which; next step is probably a different OS. Advice still very much welcome.
