How do I fix my Amazon Fire TV?

I fired up my Amazon Fire TV box for the first time in some months yesterday and it went through an update cycle and stuck on the Amazon logo. I left it overnight and this morning it said something like 'failed to mount /mnt/cache'. I've looked at the ifixit teardown and it looks like there's no drive to replace (though my model is the 2015 version).

Can I fix it or should I just replace it?

If you complain to Amazon that it broke after an update, they will either offer you a replacement device or offer you a gift card refund on your account for the original amount paid, assuming you bought it from them.

Duly noted. I've not given up yet.

You can usually connect to it via developer mode to do a firmware restore.

How do I enable developer mode remotely? It's got an ethernet port so can I telnet into it if the port is up? My router says it has an IP address but it's not responding to telnet or http on the standard ports. Nor does it respond to ping.
