How do I get 3D?

Hi there, I'm shopping for a monitor for my friend, she has just built a good system, i7/560TI/16GB ram and has asked me to choose her a monitor.

Personally I love my LG 23" LED but her budget is huge so I was considering 3D-compatible monitor.

Can you explain to me, with her 560TI and latest drivers, whether she can buy a 3D-ready monitor e.g. THIS (click), plug it in and it will be able to play 3D games? Or do you need a 3D vision kit and the glasses and such...

I know my way around high end components but I've never dabbled in 3D as yet so can someone explain to me what I need and which monitor would be suitable.

Thanks!

EDIT: I began speccing her a PC but her friend 'took over' when she went abroad and components were cheaper, thus she came back with a top end mobo and i7 2600k i think but only a 560TI. Is it worth buying a 3D monitor because the 560TI will surely struggle @1920x1080 120hz? Turning up high that is...

The 560Ti might struggle, depends on game and settings.

That LG monitor you linked to is a passive 3D. Meaning that you'll only get half resolution in 3D, due to how passive works.

For most people, the 3D is a novelty.

Monitor options are,

Get a nVidia 3D Vision compatible monitor 23-24" and 3D vision kit.
Get a 27" 3D monitor with glasses and buy 3DTV Play from nVidia.

you will need more GPU grunt than that for 3D gaming if that's what you are talking about.
In well optimised games like crysis 2 (arguably not truly 3D) it doesn't take much of a hit at all.
Worst case scenario is as everyone says, up to half the frame rate as non 3D.

SLI really helps but I wouldn't want to run anything less than my overclocked 470's. I'd buy in with more power if funds permit.

I think this screen can do 1080 in 3D but only at 60Hz due to it only being a 60Hz panel.. So say 30 each eye ( which again is fine as long as it stays there)

If she wants to use HDMI it will be pretty much useless, unless you wanna drop the res.

From what I read about this screen, its a very good screen even at 3d despite its design flaw ( 60Hz)

I'm using that LG monitor for 3D gaming and it does 1080p @60hz through the Tridef software which works very well for me with my 470GTX, not that different to a 560Ti. I'm playing Skyrim and Fallout NV and have no problems playing them. However, if you have a big budget I would definately look at the 27" Samsungs and then again you may struggle @120hz with a 560Ti.:)

The passive 3d gives a 60hz image from a 60hz screen, it shows both eyes at the same time. It's not quite as good an image as active 3d...but its a lot easier on the eyes.
