I'm sure this will be an old question, but still a bit new to the Apple world. So have a DVD I want to take on holiday to watch on the iPad... My iTunes account and iPad tether is now on an MBA (moved from Windows)

How best to rip the DVD (I have external drive) to the Air and transfer to something that will play on the Pad..... Why doesn't iTunes handle moves same as music discs ?

I tried MKV on the PC then Handbrake to mp4... seems a long way around, and doesn't import into iTunes when copied over.....

Handbrake is popular and Free, you could use it to convert the DVD movies on your MBA, just select the Apple TV or iPad as output.

FYI, Handbrake doesn't handle DTS audio tracks or single VOB files. If you have a DVD-ROM with random video files saved on it (AVI, MPG, WMV, MOV, etc), Handbrake won't be able to convert these files, then you could turn to the Mac App Store(that on your MBA) and get a professional DVD ripper, such as I got an ifunia converter in this Christmas sale.

Probably because ripping DVD's isn't legal. I personally use Handbrake to transcode the file into the correct format on the Mac, and then just drag/drop into iTunes, and then sync with iPad - done.

Thanks for the tips..... I use Handbrake on a PC, but not tried the MAC version yet.... I have now put VLC on the MBA, so it can play the MKV files directly now.
I'm allowed to rip CD's I bought to put on my NAS to stream, I don't see having pictures and sound makes it any different !!! :)
