How do i get dvds and real player downloads onto my ipod?

So i recently bought a new video ipod while on holiday on the US and was hoping to import some dvds from my collection and some stuff that i've downloaded onto real RealPlayer recorder. I have no idea why apple don't put instructions in with the ipod on how to do this stuff but i've tried for days now and i'm completely stumped.

Can anybody help a computer illiterate dunce?
