I have (had) Ubuntu 9.10working ok but then decided to play with KDE. However, after loading up the beta (4.4) version Plasma just crashes at start up and i end up with no panel to get at any apps and a borked desktop.

I tried ctrl/Alt/Backspace to get back to the login screen so i can change the session back to Gnome but that command didn't work.

Any way i can fix this so i can reboot into Ubuntu? I can access GnomeDo and hence a terminal (and presumably other progs that GnomeDo can start).

Is there a command to get back to the screen where you can choose the session?

Many thanks

you can't just log out? choose session and log back in?

Thats the problem, i can't - i have no panel/taskbar to access any buttons, and ctrl/alt/backspace doesn't work either :)

Any idea how to logout from a terminal?

thanks

partially fixed it after a bit of playing around

with alt F2 if i typed in system i get the KDE system settings and was able to turn off auto login and then reboot

HOWEVER - its still running KDM and not GDM (i think) as my menu's etc are different - any idea where in KDE you change the default? (In GDM there was a session manager in systems settings but thats not there anymore :)

any suggestions welcome - though am off to try some googling

thanks

I ran this :
dpkg-reconfigure gdm

which seems to get Ubuntu back - BUT the first part of the login screens still says Kubuntu and i' think some of the menuus and GUI is still KDE #

how can i tell if KDM or GDM is running

ALSO - which window manager should i be using - i set it metacity - but should it be compiz only i can't remember what the default is on Karmic

thanks

# edit : for example the desktop backgrund is what i set in KDE (or does thios carry forward) and the mouse pointer when its 'thinking' is different
