how do i get my monitor to switch on via HDMI?

hi all. just got my new monitor today asus VE278Q which has a hdmi slot in it. ive got HIS HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI Display graphics card and windows 7. the problem i have is when i connect the monitor up with a hdmi cable the monitor doesnt come on but it does when its connected with a VGA cable. any idea what setting i need to change? thanx
 
another thing i need to add. ive just tryed connecting my LG tv via hdmi to the pc and thats the same. so its definetly some setting on the gc or pc
 
tryed various resolutions and still get the same. oh and its via DVI im connected not vga sorry. on the monitor i can switch between inputs so when i go from dvi to hdmi all i get is the windows 7 default back ground but with no icons showing up. the background isnt zoomed in or anything either. ive tryed switching the input to HDMI and restarting but it still wont switch the monitor on. could it be anything to do with the settings in AMD vision engine control centre? ive just downloaded the latest version but still no difference :(
