Obviously there's no point getting insurance as it would be invalid without tax and I can't get tax without getting an MOT, so how do I get the car to the garage first without being illegal?

Is getting it towed the only option?

Insurance is not usually invalid without tax.

Insure it on a dayinsure policy, pre-book an appointment and drive it there.

This. As it is legal to drive an untaxed and un-MOtd car to a pre booked MOT. Most insurance companies are fine with it, If you are worried you can always check with them while you are on the phone.

Or if you know someone with DOC insurance they might be able to drive it for you. Depends on the T&C, get them to phone their insurance company to check they are covered.

I thought insurance was void without tax?

If I was to get pulled on the way to the test centre, what punishment am I looking at for not having valid tax/MOT?

None, if you are driving to a PRE-BOOKED MOT appointment. Also, the car must not be in a dangerous condition ie. sharp edges on the car etc

The insurers are fine with it, as if you do drive the car to anywhere other than to the pre booked MOT test, that it would be illgeal and the insurance is void anyway.
