How do I know if I'll need a bios update?

I'm planning to buy the B450 Asrock Fatal1ty mobo with an AMD 3600.

How can I figure out if I'll need to update the bios before it recognizes the CPU?

And what options do I have if it requires an update - assuming I got no other cpu in hand?

I've only heard that the MSI Max b450 boards are ready out the box for Ryzen 3000 series, I read on another Forum someone ordered the same CPU and Motherboard as you've mentioned and it did not boot as it needed a BIOS flash... The only way is to get an older CPU and flash it that way, I'm not sure if AMD do a boot kit still

I bought an Asus Tuf gaming plus from here, and before I purchased I rang and asked the question.
Some motherboards like mine (it had a sticker saying the bios was updated, Ryzen 3000 ready) come with updated bios
Might be worth asking the same

Either do as kevbiss1 suggested or make sure you get a motherboard with some sort of bios flashback button on it which allows you to flash the bios without a CPU etc in it.

I bought an ASUS Crosshair VII x470 at the same time as an AMD 3600x CPU.
This motherboard did not recognise the 3600x CPU so I had to update the BIOS (using BIOS flashback) before I could use it with the 3600x.

Unfortunately, the ASRock Fatal1ty does not have BIOS flashback so your options are as follows:
  • Use an older CPU to update the BIOS
  • Hope the motherboard was built with a later BIOS
  • Ask your retailer to supply the motherboard with a later BIOS
  • Get another motherboard that will either support your CPU choice out of the box or allow BIOS flashback without a CPU
