How do I know if my phone is capable of working in Italy?

I have an SGS and go to Italy next week and want to make sure everything is working.
Last year I went to Poland and I had to contact my daughter to phone my provider who then switched it on to work in Poland.

What do I do?
I'm with Orange.

Phone Orange and ask them if the International Bar is lifted.
