How do I make a windows XP CD into bootable Flash drive?

Hi guys, ive got a netbook without a dvd drive and I want to install windows xp on it. I've got the cd. Is there a way to tranfer it to a usb drive so i can install windows XpP from it?

first you need to find a way to make your windows cd into 1 iso image
might be able to use winrar to do this

once you've got the iso file
check out a program called unetboot that will make your drive bootable

I think imgburn can create an iso image of a disk, great little program.

In case your drive dies while you are configuring it for a boot drive, you can check out the article I posted on this thread, which will walk you through recovering the drive. A lot of people throw away drives that stop working but as long as it lights up still you can almost always get it working fully again.

Copy your XP disc to C:\XPCD first

Get a usb pen, minimum 1gb, and be prepared to wipe it clean.

That program on msfn looks good, I recently installed W7 on my driveless laptop using this guide: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/

I assume that XP would be the same procedure?

No, XP is a lot harder because by design, it doesn't load USB drivers the same way it does CD drivers

I'm not sure of the internals of it, but basically it's not a simple copy/paste job.



I use that tool on msfn to add a parted magic iso to the install too, and my acronis true image iso, can add W7 or Vista to the usb stick easily too

So you get a boot menu asking you which you want to use

It's worth spending an hour or so fiddling with it imo
