Hi,

Having experimented with virtual PC I find it works plenty well enough for my needs.

What I want to do salvage my old XP installation, which I've unistalled most of the Junk on, getting it down to around 30GB.

So far I've tried Acronis 10 and Acronis Home 09. Both of these insist the backup file is invalid and refuse to open it. Doesn't seem to matter whether the file in on a mapped network drive, in a shared network folder or copied into a second virtual HDD. Opens fine on a non virtual PC.

I also have Ghost so made an image, copied to a second virtual folder. Ghost runs fine until it gets to 2% then I get a decompression error and it halts.

Surely there is an easy way to catch this installation.... I'd also like to pull the one from very old and unused laptop then I can retire it off.

Any help would be great.

Please don't just say ...."Get VMware"

Acronis True Image Workstation with Bare metal restore will do the trick, if you are willing to pay

Works perfectly, and will even restore the image straight to a virtual hard disc

Hi,

Look promising as an application.
Do you know how DRM controlled it is. I'm happy to get a copy of the main application £40 and the universal restore £15 (assuming they are the right apps. The website isn't all that clear. I can't decide if I just need one copy and then I can image any disk I connect to that PC or if I need a copy for each machine I want to virtualise up.

Thanks

You are only supposed to use it on one machine. I cannot see why, if you are plugging different hard discs into that machine, it will need more than one licence.

You will need Workstation and universal restore for it to work as expected
