Hey guys,
I have a phenomII 965 black edition, watercooled with a corsair h50 kit.
I've been playing some games maxed out 1920x1080 such as far cry 2, left 4 dead, COD5, fallout 3 etc... but im getting games like GTA4 running terribly.

Basically will overclocking my CPU do anything to get GTA4 to play nice?
How easy is it to do?
And what on earth do i do to make it happen?

Never looked into this yet, but should be fine to mess cos i've got the watercooling set up with an extra fan for push+pull plus good airflow in the case and a decent setup.

(...i just saw crysis 2 maxed out on youtube in 1920res and the guy had a 5770 for goodness' sake... and a Q8800 i think although dont quote me. but i saw just how incredible it looks and thought, hmm, ive got to get that in my life)

can you help?

First off GTA4 is a dog to run, you will not be able to max it on your set up as it uses a huge amount of GPU RAM.

Over-clocking your CPU is simple, go into bios and up the multiplier a few notches keeping everything else at stock, that's the beauty of a black edition CPU.

Stress test to see if its stable using prime95 for 8hrs minimum and if it passes you are good to go, you should be about to get to about 3.6Ghz with no added voltage.

Cool, thanks.
I know, GTA is harsh. What's a good 16:9 resolution that's enough below 1920x1080 to run at high settings?
And will I see much of a performance difference with the extra .2ghz increase?

I don't think you can pull all the sliders across on GTA 4 without some mega powered system, the game engine is too demanding on the CPU and requires a huge amount of graphics memory.

A Phenom II 965 should play it on the default settings @ 45 - 60 FPS with a decent graphics card which look decent anyway.
