How do I see who is connected to my network?

Hi all.

I have 3 computers on my network. 1 of them is a wireless laptop, 2 of them are wired.
When I turned on one of the wired computers today it says the router could not assign an IP address. In my router settings I set it so it only allowed 3 IP adresses, so I changed this to 4, as a test, and it connected...
So does this mean 3 IP addresses were already in-use when I tried to connected the wired computer?
How do I see who is connected to my network?

I have a Linksys WAG354G.

are your ip addresses static on the PC's and laptop becasue your OS might have given it a different IP that was out of the range you have selected

on my netgear DG834N there is a tab on the router settings to show attached devices, there might be somthing similar, I dont no casue i have never had a Linksys router.

if you are worried about other people connecting to your router without your knowledge why not try setting up MAC address

Routers usually keep a list of what devices have been connected - should be buried somewhere in the config pages. If you can't find the info on your router - there are programs out there which are designed specifically for intruder detection... something like snort - however, you'll probably have a hard job compiling that for win32 ;)

If you're genuinely worried about people accessing your network...

1) Change the default SSID of your router, along with the default admin password.
2) Set you router to not broadcast it's SSID.
3) Set up the strongest encryption which your hardware/software will support - usually some form of WPA (not WEP).
3) Set up MAC filtering - fairly trivial to bypass by itself, but harder when it's used in conjunction with other security methods.

Log into the admin tool for the WAG354G. On the menu bar at the top choose the entry thats the last on the right (I think its labelled Status or something like that). You will then see options for Gateway, Network, Wireless and Broadband. Each of these pages provides access to a list of who/what is connected to your network. Sorry to be a bit vague but am at work and my WAG354G is at home! :)

In the WAG354G look under Status>Local Network>DHCP Client table and Status>Wireless>Wireless Clients Connected.
Or maybe try downloading Netping or Look@lan and scanning your network.
I assume you're using DHCP from your description, just a thought but could it not have just been your client lease time?

Thanks for the replies, I did forget about this.

It did seem to fix itself in the end. I am using MAC filtering, WPA encyption with a good pass and I have changed the default admin pass, so I would be very surprised if it was an intruder afterall.
I think last time I turned off SSID broadcast the wireless clients didn't seem to work, even though they had the correct manual settings... I will try it again later.

I guess it was probably an IP conflict or something.

Thanks for the instructions on how to see who is connected to the network, that is very handy.
