I have a laptop and a CRT. Both are pluged in and set up correctly, but I can't seem to find any way of controlling which screen is used by programs.

Nvidia btw.

right click on desktop, properties, settings

that should show both displays and allow you to extend your desktop on to the other.

or your graphics card might have its own graphics adaptor software

Bring up the video card control panel, and you should be easily able to assign the displays, and also change display-specific settings.
For eg, this is a screenshot from my laptop with the lousy intel integrated video, and I am running a 17" HP monitor as my secondary display.

BTW, check out Multimon (free) if you are running dual displays. It gives you the Windows taskbar on the secondary monitor too.

EDIT: okay, you guys already replied while I was composing my post.
For an Ultramon-like solution (free) check out Multimon. You can assign programs to the specific display.

I think seek is after an app that defines what monitor an application defaults to opening on, not how to set up dual displays.

Multimon does that once you 'send' the application to the secondary monitor for the first time.
EDIT: Major correction. Doesn't work with *all* apps, for some reason. But works with the browsers and MS office atleast.
I am pretty sure Ultramon could do it too.

Multimon is not as polished as Ultramon, but it's good enough for a free product.:D

When I used it, I think it remembered the last position on whichever screen the program was closed on, so next time it was opened it started in the same place.

It does, but I'd much prefer it to remember where I specifically set it to open rather than remember where it was closed. This is especially annoying when you have a quad setup like I do :(

-for the record, i wasn't being a pedantic arse :) i've not used umon for a few years

edit, that's a blooming long time between official releases!

man, that's hellish expensive, when will they learn and release things for $10 instead

follow steam's example :)
