Thought I'd try my luck in here as well as my other thread...

Right with my son's impending birthday we've bought him a HUDL2. This means my wife can have her iPad back.

Having just switched from iPhone to a Galaxy S6 I am still learning my way with Android.

Thus I was wondering how best to setup my new sons HUDL2. It'll will be his as my wife and I have our own tablets and I plan to use some sort of Kids mode.

Would I be wise to setup with my account and then just use a kids mode app for my son or should I get him his own gmail account? confused.com

Any help greatly appreciated by one confused dad.....

My hudl2 is set up for my three year old by giving her her own account. No gmail is required, you just create a new user and lock it down.

- You decide what apps they see.
- You stop them connecting to the internet, at all.
- You lock down your own account with a password / pattern so they can't just log in as you and access everything.
- iPlayer with PIN protection for adult content.

All four of our accounts appear on the splash screen when you wake it from standby. Of course this doesn't mean you can leave them willy-nilly, just in case, but it's a very good system and one I actually never realised was on Android tablets even when I bought the Hudl2.

That sounds perfect cheers mate.

In relation to choosing their apps is this dynamic ie can I add more as and when?

I take it I would download the app on my account then grant them access?

Exactly that.

I use the master account to download the app, then go into user security and 'delegate authority' for my daughter to be able to access the app. If you set him up as a child user, each app you download will by default not be available to child accounts, so there's no danger of you forgetting to remove access for something. You have to actively grant him access.

Some apps you can allow network access, such as CBeebies storytime. When it wants to download something, it asks you to enter a PIN based on the numbers in words (even though it's just a kid's story). I feel totally comfortable leaving my kid with the tablet. The riskiest thing I suppose is YouTube, since even with adult filter enabled some questionable adverts can interfere.

The only way it can really go wrong is if you allow him to watch you logging into your own account, or obviously if you accidentally delegate full app access to him.

Great, thanks for taking the time mate, that's really cleared it up for me.

On the subject of YouTube I see google do a kids version now, might be worth a go?

YouTube kids - I've not heard of that, nor can I find anything on the play store. Are you sure it's by Google?
