How do I stop Windows Antimalware? (Windows 7)

Hi,

For some reason the Windows Antimalware service has decided to start hogging resources and now spins the fan constantly. How can I disable this? Or at least only let it run when in screensaver?

I cant seem to stop it from Services.msc or msconfig.

From memory that's Windows defender, you should be able to disable it by opening up Windows defender (as an admin on the PC) and having a look through the settings.

Make sure you have an alternative product ready though.

Thanks Halfmad. I installed the latest AVG free antivirus first. Then I used a application called AutoRuns to kill the Microsoft Antimalware service which worked a treat.

Next time, just type Defender into the Start menu then disable it from within the options.
