Hi all, i've just moved into a new place with virgin cable. The guys in the flat think it might be 20 meg but they aren't really sure. Downloads seem to peak at about 1megabyte per sec which would suggest i'm on a 10mbit line or perhaps a 20meg line which isn't fast enough. So is there a quick way i can check what speed i should have, without having to phone virgin? THANKS

What modem is it? If it's an NTL250 or Virgin Media branded 255/256 then you can go to http://192.168.100.1 and log in with the default user/pass of root/root. The speed will be listed under "Operation Config" and if it's 20mbit it'll say:

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000

If it's 10mbit it'll of course be half that, at 10240000.

If it's an older modem like a Motorola it's still possible to access via the same URL but you have to look at the logs to see the entry for the config file download.

If you're using the modem they've provided, try going to http://192.168.100.1/ in your browser. Hopefully it'll still be the default login details.

Once you've logged in go to the "Operation Config." section and it should have the info you need there.

*Edit - Sorry, I was too slow! :(

Mine says:
Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz

Does that mean I'm on the new 50mb one?

Edit:
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Oh well - guess not :(

Try downloading multiple files from different hosts at the same time. The 1 meg you are seeing is probably a limit of the uploading server.
