Today, my Netgear DG834 arrived in the post.

After a bit of grief and hassle, I finally got it up and running using the supplied installation disc. Before that, I carried out a fresh reformat of my PC so I had a nice clean slate to work with.

The router is working fine, I've went into the settings and changed over to PPPoE and in the ADSL settings have changed to LLC based for PPPoE. Also changed the MTU setting to 1400 from the default 1492.

Everything is working very well indeed, and I have net access through IE.

I then tried to install AOL 9.0. It goes through the install procedure, then asks me to restart the PC, which I have done.

There is now a desktop icon for AOL 9.0 on my desktop, but when I click on it, it starts AOL and then a grey box pops up and says something along the lines of "AOL will now install the files required for you to connect to the service, you may be required to restart your computer".

So I click on "Yes" and AOL closes, then another grey box pops up and says "In order to install the files, you need to restart your computer".

Again, I click "Yes".

The PC restarts and once again, I click on the AOL icon, and the above sequence repeats itself. I've done it 6 times in a row and it seems to be just going round in circles now!!!. Can still access the net through the router no problem, but I like the "everything included" way that the AOL software is, so I would like to have the option and install it, but I'm getting nowhere.

Just tried uninstalling and reinstalling and the same thing happened.

I think it may be something to do with me trying to install AOL when I'm already connected to the web via the router?.

Think I need to disconnect from the web and try installing when offline.

How do I disconnect from the net without loosing the routers settings if its switched off for more than a minute?. Or if I unplug the power from the router, install AOL and power back up, will my router settings still be intact?.

Apologies for the questions, I've never used a router until today and I'm not that well up to speed on all of their ins and outs!!!

Thanks.

So if I just pull the power adaptor out it will switch it off and I will be "offline" till I plug it back in again?.

as mentioned, turning off doesn't reset the settings. To reset the settings to default you have to physically push in a small button on the back of the modem for about 10 seconds.
