Can anyone tell me how to use an IRC bot?

I'm an IRC noob, but I've started a channel for my forum and want a bot in it, mainly just to lurk there to keep the channel open when nobody is in it.

I've googled IRC bots, but I can't find a 'beginners guide' so none of it makes much sense to me.

I just want to put something on my hosting space so it lurks in the channel.

You need a server to run the bot so you will need to check with your hosting company to see if they allow it. If they don't then you can either run it locally or find a provider that does.

It depends what you need. If you want the bot on your PC, first download mIRC then go to www.mircscripts.org and download a bot from there.

Or if you want it to be hosted on a server then you need to search for eggdrop most normal hosts wont allow these to be hosted (Or never did anyway) But there are plenty of cheap eggdrop hosts out there

If you don't want a bot, you could simply buy a bouncer, which will effectively pretend to be you and will be there when you go offline. They are pretty cheap from what I remember 5 or so years ago!

Bots are mainly used for channel control - stopping spam etc.

The server will prolly have some kind of bot that does admin work and the likes for keeping the channel open. The one on Quakenet is called Q, other networks sometimes called it P or Chanserv and stuff like that. Usually if you find the server's homepage you can get info on requesting the bot to lurk in the channel for you, that way you don't have to host anything your self etc.

its efnet.

Basically we had a channel on efnet, but obviously that doesnt have chanserv/botserv/nickserv. So since we're IRC noobs we decided to move the our channel to another server that has these things, as it will be easier for us to protect our channel.

Problem is a rival group wants to seize our old channel on efnet if we ditch it. So I figured the solution would be to stick a bot in the channel and leave it on +i, thus preventing anyone from using the channel.

So at the moment it's just me lurking in the chan, with it on +i, but that will only last until I next get disconnected, and then it's all over.
