Moved house recently and our bb was activated today

Current stats are

Connection speed 4091 down 510 up
Line attenuation 33 down 15 up
Noise margin 15 down 24 up

Now the bt speed checker told me i could expect 15 meg or so on my line

I know its only just activated and it has a 10 day learning period but anyone tell me how those stats shape up and whether i will get anywhere near 15 Meg?

Couple of questions too

My modem is plugged into an extension will this make a massive difference compared to the master socket?

And will it affect the lines training period if i turn the modem off to plug it into the master socket instead?

Yea it does make a difference as the extension cable was never desinged for data and you are extending the length of the line.

No you can turn the modem off to move it but obviously if you started turning it off and on repeatedly and often then it would probably think there is an issue on the line and synch slower.

And plugging into the master gives me 4091 down 510 up. Attenuation of 33/17 so stays the same but the noise margin changed to 23/16

So to recap extension lead gives noise margin of 15 down 24 up
Master socket gives me a noise margin of 33 up 17 down

What just happened?

Some ISP now cap a new line for a few days and allow the line to come upto speed gradually (at least that what a coupl eof people on Sky have ben told) how long as the line been live as it certainly looks like your speed capped.

Removed your bell wire from master socket? this has a good chance of bringing down some interference.

Your extension lead is clearly very poor. You should get little or no change.

I think when installing my extension (cheap) I got a 0.5 db difference on Noise Margin which I suppose is acceptable.

If you are getting 4Mbit then if you can maintain that 33 noise margin then you should be on for a good connection speed. With it at 15 you wont get more than 6 maybe 7 Mbit. It would be wise at this stage of the training process to leave it plugged in to the master socket so you don't have to spend time calling your ISP to do another training period later on.

Get a decent extension installed using twisted pair BT spec cable or something. I had an extension once in a previous house that used aluminium insead of copper to save cost and it didn't like the broadband signal, however voice was fine.

Is this Sky broadband? All their lines start at 4Mbps. Best thing you can do is just leave alone for a week or so until the speed stabilises.

me and my impatience :)

its sky btw just checked this morning and we're on a steady 8 meg now

What has the Noise Ratio dropped to now? Sky usually aim for a 7db Noise Ratio.

noise margin is 14db on the downstream line attenuation of 33db and connection speed of8189 kbps

upstream is 8db on the noise margin 17db on line attenuation and 775kbps on the connection speed.

anyone care to hazard a guess as to where she will settle?

oh and as for the bell wire, i haven't had a look yet. would i gain anything significant from removing it?

You should have a check to see whats connected on your extension boxes as with today's phones you only need wires 2 and 5 connected in sockets the other wires will just act as BIG ANTENNAS to pick up noise and KILL your speed.

ALSO make sure to get some GOOD DSL filters or better still filter plates for the master and extension sockets.

As a guess I'd say you might get 12-13Mbit. I might be wrong here but your upload seems to have maxed itself out. Not sure as upstream works differently to downstream.

just to bring some closure to this,

have been playing about with various things

rewired the extensions in the house and removed bell wire from all the sockets.

i now have the following stats :)

JUNE
Connection speed 4091 down 510 up
Line attenuation 33 down 15 up
Noise margin 15 down 24 up

TODAY
Connection speed 13718 down 764 up
Line attenuation 33 down 18 up
Noise margin 7 down 8 up

anyone think theres room to squeeze aq bit more out of this yet?

steam downloads sitting at a solid 1.4 Meg/sec same with torrents so i'm a much happier chappy. I'm thinking about binning my sky router and going for something else and seeing if i can get a bit more on both download and upload
