i have a work email address that gets sometimes 50 spam emails a day that land in the inbox.

these emails are often from waitrose, as though someone has submitted a contact form on waitrose website and their auto reply then gets sent to us. but what i don't understand is that these auto replies arne't address to us, the email is approx from: [email protected], and to: [email protected]

so how do these get to our inbox?

another is university of exeter contact form.

all seem to be some sort of contact/support form filled out and we get the auto reply.

what's even more confusing is that you then get some dumbo replying to these spam emails and seemlingy clicking reply all saying something like "we didn't ask for this email please remove us from your list", which then if you view the email to list, it's a long list of everyones email.

i can understand spam email directed to us, e.g. we get emails that do end up spam that's trying to sell us something, often seo/advertising. but these support emails i don't get.

Spoofing or abusing mail gateways/relays or contact forms on sites etc.

Dump the mail header, should be able to see more from there (remove any sensitive info ofc).

Can't remember who it was but one of the saas companies has a service ticket system that doesn't require auth and hence it was getting used to generate spam as anyone could raise a ticket. Sometime late last year/early this year? Can't remember but I think it was Salesforce (they have plenty of previous in being utterly incompetent).

i can see my email address in the header, but what's the point of these emails? they couldn't look more like spam. they aren't asking for anything. often the reply to email is a no reply.
