how do u overclock?

ok, ive been gaming for a few years now, and ive just got my new system built and running.

i think its about time i learned how to overclock it!

i know its probably rather complicated to explain. but if u could tell me the basics and what programs to use (if any) and i will test and learn on my old machine.
