What I normally do is focus after I've placed the filter where I want it and meter for the bit of the scene I want to expose for before putting in the filter. Or at least did when I used a cokin system.

nearly all of my time is taken up with motorsports (mainly motocross, some rally) and horse photography nowadays, not much need for grad filters in those so sold them a while ago.
I love to do motor sport shots sometime but need to know how to do them first ha ha.
I like doing Animals shots too along with Landscapes. I live out in the Peak District and I am waiting for some lovely weather as I have only got my 400D last week.
