How do you capture video via Firewire?

I've attached my MiniDV Camera to my Mac (via 4-9 pin firewire) and set the device to playback mode.

For the first time in history, the Mac doesn't do anything when a new device is plugged in. I don't really know what I'm doing now. I assumed in 2011 OS X would have some sort of programme to capture video but absolutely nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Just out of interest, I'm still using Vegas Video via Bootcamp.

Is there a decent and inexpensive (£100 or student license) video editing app for the Mac that's worth learning and has pretty decent functionality?

Yes, it's free and it ships with every Mac and it's called iMovie. Seriously, it's a very powerful application, it's far from trash :)

It's great for knocking together a decent video quickly and easily but it lacks so many features required to produce less amateurish looking videos.

Failing that Final Cut Express is good (don;t get Final Cut Pro X yet, its not yet the finished article)

I never really liked iMovie and so I thought I'd try out Premiere Elements instead as the work I'm doing at the moment is really basic. Love it, highly intuitive and I've been able to get fantastic results very quickly. I'm assuming if and when I make the jump to the real deal it won't be too much of a learning curve.
