as title i find cows very scarey, you walk miles and miles on these footpaths enjoying the walk then the next field is full of menacing cows ,its udderly terrifying imho . are you supposed to run towards them waving your arms or just keep as far away as possible ,honestly this is a serious question as its spoiling my walks

Just walk normally. If they come near you simply scare them off by stomping towards them and moving your arms towards them.

However if they have calves with them, be very careful as the mothers can be very protective, especially if walking with dogs.

I know where you're coming from. I have to go into fields all the time in my job, and I hate it when there's half tonne+ lumbering, stupid animals taking an interest in me. Some playful young bulls took an interest in me once and started galloping towards and around me. I had to whack them with a pole I was carrying and jump a fence to stop them knocking me over and probably trampling me to death.
Sorry I don't have the answer.

Cows are inquisitive and always wonder across to me if I'm near the edge of a field.

Cows? They're big but very placid animals. They can be quite curious but will scare away easily if you really need.

lol...cows & scary just don't go in the same sentence together.

There speaks a man that aint had 3/4 of a ton of cow running towards you at high speed....

Even farmers know when to leave a cow alone in certain circumstances....

As said tho, 99% of the time they are just being curious....

This. Just walk normally. Cows are normally very docile so s long as you try not to get between them and their calf then they'll be fine.

If you have a dog and need to go through a field with calves, if the dog is well behaved the best bet is to let them fend for themself... Let the dog off and get it to sit just outside the field if possible, walk across and then call the dog... That way you aren't in the field when the cows go crazy and a dog is far more agile than you...
