Hey all, just a quick question.

For some English Language work I'm writing an article on the English Language, and I'm just writing about accents and dialects.

So how do you feel about certain accents and dialects? Do you ever percieve someone in a certain way if they use a certain accent or dialect?

The same about use of slang as well, how do you percieve people who use slang? Do you think they are less educated, etc?

Thanks for any answers :)

Accents and slang are just natural to me, I don't think anything of them.

I do hate some accents and slang but I don't think it reflects on a person's intelligence.

As some one who is from Sweden, has lived in Surrey for 8 years, and spent two of those years in an American school, to now live in Liverpool.....Id say my accent is slightly different from most people. Quite often conversation starters but I wouldnt say it sways people either towards or away from me.....maybe the Scouse accent hasnt set in enough yet ;)

In all seriousness, I am always on guard for lies/embellishments when confronted with a Nigerian accent. That's purely down to past experience though (and no I didn't get caught by a 419 scam) :p

Cheers for that, I haven't even thought about mentioning a Nigerian accent and all the scammers from Nigeria.

Really? I think the Nigerian accent seems quite friendly. I guess it's more to do with your perception of the people who use the accent, rather than the accent giving us a perception of the person.

scousers = thieves
mancs = brawlers
cockney = con artist
brummie = thick
welsh = annoying
geordie = dirty birds
cornish = farmers
doncaster/barnsley = thick
scottish = eh?
northern irish = terrorist
southern irish = 'how you doing?' ;)

european wise...

german = blunt/arguamentative
spanish = liar
italian = up own arse
french = smells
eastern european accents = i really like to be honest. helps that my ex was czech. ;)

have i left anyone out that i havent insulted?

I have utmost confidence and faith in somebody with a BBC accent. The BBC accent stretches in a giant band across the country, taking in parts of Bedfordshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Herts etc.

Liverpool is good, a softly spoken scouse accent makes someone sound caring and trustworthy, reliable in a fatherly way.

Everyone with a Geordie accent should be witty (males) or hot (females)

Proper Cockney accents make me think of used car dealers, market stall traders etc.

Manchester accents usually make me think of herberts and drug dealers

Norfolk - sister shaggers

Bristol - Farmers

Yorkshire/Lancashire - Dependable but not overly exciting. Constant as the northern star. Useful in a fight or perhaps as older brother material. Guaranteed to turn up with a shotgun to sort out the crims if you were being burgled.

They are the ones that spring to mind :D

Working in a call centre that deals with pretty much the whole country, I get to speak to a wide range of people with loads of different accents..

Personally I love the Welsh accent. My accents wierd as its sort of half Stokey and half Yam Yam (Cannock area lol)

Everyone says I sound posh though, because I actually articulate most of my words when i'm on the phone.

Northen= slow and dim witted, possibly inbred.
Proper country accent eg Norfolk/ Somerset= inbred and simple.
Manc= northern= stupid and untrustworthy.
Scouse= northern= untrustworthy.
Proper London= Used car salesman and a skinflint
Home counties= win. BBC accent is the best.
Moron southern chav accent eg staines egham kent= untrustworthy, common and moronic.

Anything which is not a BBC accent= foreign, northern, inbred, dim witted or all of those :D

people who are quick to denounce me as a posh snob can f off as they are ignorant and moronic as well as commoners so not worth associating with tbh!

hope that was enlightening.

Uhmmm.... Chinese?:rolleyes:

why the rolleyes? the guy wants to know about perception of accents. :)

nigerian = genocidal nutters/scam artists.
chinese = hot women/bruce lee.

myself i would class as sounding common to be honest. not posh in the slightest. apparently midlanders don't have a broad accent of any kind until you start getting towards derby and brum.
