Hi there, please can you give advice on how to install drivers from the floppy drive within windows xp for my new SATA hard drive. Or do I need to do it some other way, because its not showing up in device manager or in my computer and I have it all plugged in. At the moment I've got XP installed on a normal IDE hard drive and this new SATA drive is running allong side it.

Thanks in advance,

Something should pop up before you install XP, think you have to press F6 to 'install 3rd party SCSI or Raid Driver'

With RAID drivers. they often need 2 different drivers.

One for a bootable array, this is the type that requires the old F6 during install

And the other that is needed for use after you have installed.

It depends on the controler you have used of course, but its clear that you need the latter.

Might I just add though...

You are not trying to somehow magically turn your 2 HD setup into a RAID setup are you? Only I have seen this happen where someone has 2 x (X)GB Hard Drives installed XP onto one of them and then tried turning them into an array???

I basically bought a new PC, and I bought a SATA hard drive with it and I dont know how to install vista to it, because I dont have a floppy drive with it to install the raid drivers, so am stuck.....

So I tried to put the SATA in my old PC alongside my old IDE hard drives to see if I could install the raid drivers and vista on to it some other way but I cant seem to work out how to do it.

Now its asking me for fast track controller drivers?

Howcome the new motherboards dont support those old ribbon cables anyways? now all my DVD drives and Floppy drives are useless?...

Thanks in advance,

you need to create a drivers disk.your new motherboard should have a drivers CD , th raid drivers will be in there somewhere or altenatively download them from the web. Put them on a floppy disk using your old PC.

Take the floppy drive out from your old pc connect it up to your new one !

As for the connections, most manufacturers are moving away from IDe in favour of SATA .However, i am very surprise that you new mothernoard doesnt have any old style connectors at all .

Having said all the above. Im not sure from your post that you are actually trying to install 2 Sata drives in a raid array .from what you have said it sounds like you are just trying to install xp ont a new single sata drive so there is no need for raid drivers. Mabe if this is the case you sould check your bios setting and make sure you havent got the raid controller enabled.

sounds like your trying to install a new sata drive, if your not using raid on this and just using it normally the mobo disc will have the sata drivers on it

when i built mine form scratch plugged in the hd, installed windows, put in cd and loaded the sata drivers

raid is completely different

Thanks for your replies, am going to try a few things tomorrow.

Just to update you with whats going on, I still havent managed to get the new PC working. And yes you're right in thinking its just one SATA Hard Drive am trying to install xp or vista to it and I'm failing to do so.

The thing is, me, and my two friends, have tried three different SATA hard drives in three different PC's and none will install windows. We just get that error message on the blue screen of death saying "please unplug any new hardware......check for viruses.......we have cancelled setup installation to prevent damage to your hardware".......or something along those lines.

It's been two days of hell, am really frustrated and really tired and fed up.

This motherboard doesnt have an IDE slot on it, not even one, otherwise I would have just installed the operating system onto a normal IDE.

I always loved it in the past because IDE install so easy, no hassel, where as SATA drives I've never got to work, and neither has any of my friends.

We even went out today and bought an external USB hard drive thinking perhaps we could install the operating system to that instead and everything would be sweet and then I could just run the SATA drive seperatly and then install all my games to that......but it just seems to me like you cant install operating systems to external hard drives because we just kept getting blue screen of death or it would just say that the OS cant be installed to this device.

Its all been a nightmare, I swear to god.

Seriously though whats going on? Why is this so hard to get done? I have two SATA hard drives and an external USB hard drive and none will install windows? Does everyone go through this hassel or just me? Is this compatibility issues?

Any more suggestions are welcome.

Me and my friend are planning on taking it back to the shop tomorrow and saying "look mate, this doesnt work, install vista and give it back to me when you've got it working", lol.......because we've seriously tried everything and we just give in. It looks like am going to have to pay for it to be fixed or something. I was so looking forward to it aswell, I just wanted to get crysis up and running, its got 4gig of corsair ram, quad core CPU, £200 nvidia 9800 GTX+ with watercooling which cost like £200 on its own. OMG! I'm seriously dying here.

Oh and P.S. Is there something I can buy to extend the number of PCI slots and IDE slots?

Thanks in advance,

If you have 1 SATA drive and are trying to install Windows onto it then RAID shouldn't even come into it.

Configure your BIOS to NOT be in RAID mode, i.e. configure it to be in IDE mode.

Maybe some info on which motherboard you have might help others point you in the right direction as far as configuring your BIOS.

The motherboard manual will usually have enough basic information on configuring the BIOS for a single drive and how to install Windows onto it.

In my experience, Windows XP will support a sata drive attached to a sata controller by default (at least on the most recent intel chipsets eg x38.).
However PC will blue screen during os install if the bios is configured for AHCI and the cd has not been slipstreamed with intel chipset drivers.
I found F6 not to work but slipstreamed cd did.
If wanting to use AHCI mode(which i think is required to appreciate at least some significant improvements in sata),then I suggest u
1.Download latest chipset drivers..run .exe with /? to extract the files to a folder location rather than install.
2.use n-lite to slip stream drivers into bootable windows cd

Thanks for your replies again, well this is the information on my motherboard:

Motherboard

Intel DG45ID
Intel G45 Express Chipset
Memory support 533/667/800MHz (8192Mb maximum)
8 Channel High Definition Audio
6xUSB 2.0
6xSATA
1x PCI Slot
1x PCI Express x16 2x PCI Express x1 Slots

I'm going to check the bios settings and see if I can disable some of the things you've mentioned so far.

Thanks for your help so far,

Ok I've taken it back to the shop where I bought it, its in gods hands now (or theirs) lol. They said I have to pay £50 when I pick it up and thats its going to take upto 10 working days.....

cant even believe it, gutted man, I feel like I've had my heart ripped out. Oh well, so much for christmas this year....lol!

I'll post back when they have fixed it and its home and am playing Crysis in ultra settings! mmmmwaahaHHH!!

I have a feeling its going to be something to do with the motherboard, but guess we'll see! Hopefully it will only take a couple of days and not 10 like they said. I'm dying to play on it!

Thanks for all your help guys & girls,
