How do you install software on your machines?

I'm wondering (just out of interest), how does everybody else deploy software to their machines? Do you create an image with all of the software and other configurations already setup and then deploy that? Or do you prefer to use GPOs to deploy the software? Or maybe you use SCCM... how does everyone else deploy software to their computers?

Currently configuring SCCM 2007R3 but App-V is also another interest of mine so i'd recommend both

SCCM at my old place, SMS (still) and Softgrid (again, still lol) at my new place.

This kind of stuff used to be my 'thing' and not having anything to do with it in my new job is a little frustrating :p

i envy you IT departments with money! we use a master system image. Never had much luck with GPO roleouts.

How is WPKG?

We create a base image with most of the applications, other than some from accounts and marketing. Then if we want to upgrade or remove software it will be done with gpo or login scripts.

But if you don't have software deployment software like sccm or alteris. There is no nice way. Sometimes some applications cause a lot of problems, especially when they are old. They would not uninstall silently etc.

Just building an image now and it is one problem after another. :(

SCCM pays for itself in cutting down support costs. Before I came here and put SCCM in place, people would physically visit the machine to install software!!! They used an antiquated version of Ghost to image which involved booting off a floppy or CD and couldn't be guaranteed to work. Now we WOL, PXE boot and that's pretty much it!

we dont have about 20 odd machines here so a few thousand vs my legs....my legs lose....
