How do you know if apps use secure comms?

When using apps on an insecure network, such as a public WiFi access point, how are we supposed to know whether the apps is using secure communications or not.

Take Facebook for example, when using the website I have it set to force an SSL connection all the time for security but, if I'm using the iOS app, how do I know whether they've bothered using secure communications or not? For all I know it could be sending passwords and data in the clear over whatever network I'm using.

For this reason I'm always very wary of using certain apps on public WiFi networks - am I just being paranoid?

Short answer is, you don't.

Unless an app give you the option on a settings page or something it could either be using a secure or unsecure connection for sending data.

I would imagine though that 'most' login type connections will be secured. It really is very bad practice not to.
