From the stupid crap and popups that you come across on the internet?

Yes I could educate them not to click things like "You've won an hourly prize" but I want a simpler/quicker solution.

chop fingers off?
only joking if it were me i would have edt security scanner and another antispyware program set to scan every other day

To stop my old man from clicking on stupid things and getting the pc filled up with Spyware (which results in a phone call to me while im at uni asking me why his pc is so slow lately :p ), I've installed Opera browser on his machine to combat some of the pop-ups.
I've also installed NOD32 anti-virus, which is perfect for the job as it's quick and doesn't use up many resources, and complemented that with Microsoft Windows Defender Beta to provide real-time anti-spyware protection.

Plus I've turned on Automatic Updates on his machine so I won't have to come home from uni and find the network infected with virae/other nasties.
His PC is behind a hardware firewall as well so I think he's fairly well protected now, and I won't get that damned phone call every month or two :D :p

I use a decend A/V package (NOD32) and Spybot, as well as the IE popup blocker, and Windows SP2 firewall. Not really had any problems with the computer.

f it was me i would install a decent remote software and once a week log in and clean it up yourself if they ware anything like my grandparent

that's what i did at uni, very handy. well i didn't log in once a week but i had it there to help with problems. they are actually quite good at not getting spyware

A mix of solutions here; including local policy restrictions, password-protected NOD32, Windows Defender and Spybot Search & Destroy.

I also VNC into their PC every couple of weeks or so to check everything is running OK. :)

I like the sound of the restrictions. Know any good sites/resources I could use to learn about these?

Again, cool. What do you use for this? I'm behind a router which will stay here when I return to Uni. I have a laptop my Mum could use or she might get a basic PC for online banking. Would I be able to VNC into the laptop/PC through the router?

They use Norton. Totally against my advice (makes their PC, which is essentially the same spec as mine, so so slow), but if it works, so be it.

Norton seemed to fall to pieces the other day: My Mum was on a lyrics website, Norton spewed up errors about missing files. Few restarts later, and it was seemingly fine again. Very odd.
