Hello,

I am totally skint as ever so was thinking of getting an E2140 from ebay, i have a 775 motherboard and a 8600GT so far. What do you think of this CPU, i see it can be highly OC'able, i might try to go from 1.6Ghz --> 2.2Ghz max or so ?

Or i could just get a P4 775 or a P4 775 HT or a P4 775 D, so would this E2140 easily beat all these other P4's i've just mentioned even on stock Ghz?

Don't say get anything above the E2140 as i just can't afford it.

Thanks

Nice little chip, I have one in my HTPC. Very cool running, and overclock nicely. 2.2GHz should be a breeze so long as you don't have a really really poor motherboard. I've had mine at 3GHz (although never got it stable there - I didn't bother :p)

Ok it sounds like the E2140 is the better, but i did read somewhere that most games don't make use of both cores, is this right..........?

A lot of games do not make full use of all the cores but it's not as bad as if you had a quad sitting there with 3 cores doing nothing. All modern cpu's are either 2, 3 or 4 cores. For god's sake do not go and get a P4 just because games do not make the most of the multi-core cpu's. It will still murder a P4.

If you get one on the bay do not pay over the odds. They have been going for silly prices lately. Any more than £30 inc p&p and it's not worth it in my opinion. If you look there is one on there for £25 + £3 p&p.

Most games usually require only 1 thread (core) but the 2140 is significantly faster than any P4 at any clock

Check out this great review of the E2160 in games.

For god's sake do not go and get a P4

:D

I have an E2160 @ 3.06GHZ on my work station at work.

The E2140 is almost as good for overclocking, and just to echo what others have said, you should get to the mid 2GHZ with reasonable ease with a decent board / air flow.

My 2140 is at 3.2ghz stable, has been for months, at 1.36v it hits 47c running prime. Good chip for the money.

Ijust got a brand new e2140 off the bay still sealed in box for £35. Ive got it to at 2.4 using the stock fan and load tems are 65c on both cores. Is 25secs 1m superpi normal cos seems a tad low to me??

I get 21.8 secs with a Q6600/P5Q-Deluxe/4GB-8500 at 2.4GHz so that seems about right.

Excellent chip! You can pump plenty of vcore through them without fear of death by Volts!

You could consider an e5200 of the 'bay as more than viable alternative...

That's a high temperature for that clock speed! If u have the voltage set to auto in BIOS adjust it manually to find a lower stable voltage. Could also be a result of very poor airflow but def seems high to me.

OMG  at such a low voltage and very reasonable temp why not push for 3.6 with that chip, u could get lucky!

So what is the stock voltage for this cpu (vcore i think) and what would be a reasonable max increase in voltage, 0.1V??

Ive tried to put mine to 400x6 but it will not have it,, I guess thats down to the motherboard cos the cpu is still at 2.4 with the memory at stock speed?? Has any1 been able to get the abit ip35 to run at 400 or over? I have a abit ip35 pro in my main systen and that goes over 400 easy

Oh just thought could it be todo with im only running a 12v 4pin plug in the board and not a 8pin??

It will not go past 410fsb and thats flakey. Ive tried everything!

These chips are known to hit their FSB wall at around 415-430fsb. But that is plenty! Not sure why you want to run this chip higher!

If you're lucky you can reach 100% overclock with the 8x multi i.e. 8x400=3.2GHz thus no need for higher FSB unless you into extreme overclocking.

The VID is probably 1.325V. In terms of vcore increase you can up it happily to 1.5V for 24/7 use or higher for benching! Had mine up to 1.7V for suicide Pi run at 3.7GHz+! lol!:D
