How do you set up VPN?

Me and my mate are trying to set up a VPN. Ive got a Netgear D834G which can act as an end point, and he has a Netgear rp614 v2, which can do VPN passthrough. Were assuming that he is going to need a VPN client. What client do you all reccomend? We've tried with the built in windows one with little luck. Any tips or tricks?

windows one its easy. just port forward on your routers to the pc that is hosting the vpn server. follow the steps in setting up the vpn client and host, remember the firewall.
