How does Disqus work

I have a Disqus account that I use to comment on PC Gamer. When I try to sign in to comment on IGN it says the account doesn't exist or something? I'd like to carry over my 'profile' onto whatever website I comment on (that uses Disqus) but it doesn't seem possible?

It does but only for the coding / application not the whole service it turns out.
