I got given a free gift of Dota 2 by another member yesterday but when I boot into it, it tells me that I only have a "spectator only" version of the game!!??!!??

Is it "out" yet or have I done something wrong??

You might need to redeem the gift if it has been sent, by default everyone gets spectator client i think. Other than that you'd need to contact valve if the gift is only allowing you access to spectator.

Yeah... everyone has the Spectator mode by default. However, after a week or two (it's how long it took my friend to get it) you receive the full game. That being said, I'm under the impression the Gift version of the game is the full thing... so you should be able to play right from the start.

Like Purdy said, if it is the latter... you might want to contact Valve about it.

I might be ignorant here but you buy the game and they force you to be a spectator for the first week or two before it allows you to play it!?

No it doesn't, also the game is F2P unless you buy beta access (which is instant access to game not spectator :p)

Thanks for the replies guys!

The gift said it had already been redeemed but since it said I already owned the game that it had worked OK!

I guess not!?!?

This is weird, the link to redeem the free gift on Steam definitely says it has already been redeemed but when I search for the game on Steam it does say I already own it but when I run it it still just says I have the spectator version!?!?

Is there anything I have to do in-game to activate it???
