How does email autoreply work?

Hi
If i setup autoreply in my email client, do i need to keep my client running and set automatically retrieve emails from the server for it work? or is it server based?

i am using outlook express, if it helps.

Think you would need to keep PC turned on.

Are you using a webmail email system? If you are you might be able to set the AutoReply through the website interface and leave the PC off.

If you are connected to an exchange server(or possible any other mail server, not to sure thoguh), you can turn the client pc off.
