Ive been considering a full new pc, something Ive never done before, I bought an overclocked bundle from overclockers 2 years ago, an i5 750@4ghz bundle which has ran a treat since then.

Ive been considering buying one of the pre built systems with i5/i7 but im really not sure if the upgrade (to something like the Tita 8200i Spinosaur with i5 2500k o/c to 4.6ghz) is going to be worth it.

What sort of performance boost would I see from something like this? Id be putting a 7970 or 7950 in it as well, obviously a decent jump from my 2gb 6950, i just dont know whether i should just get the card and hang fire on the rest of the machine just now.

I don't think you'll get a massive boost to performance going from a 4GHz 750 to a 4.6GHz 2500k. If it was my money I'd get the new graphics card and save the platform upgrade for Ivy Bridge or beyond.

Ivy should turn up in May I think. Intel are committed to a new process or architecture every year, so there's always something new round the corner. Ivy is a die shrink of Sandy, with a few tweaks. Next year (Haswell?) will be the new design.

I am certainly not thinking of upgrading anytime soon. I will probably even give Ivybridge a miss. The price paid for the performance gain is simply not worth it. Money is better spent on a SSD or graphics card.
