How does 'New for Old' Household cover work?

Can anyone shed any light on this? ive got an Item that broke in the house and im looking to claim on our new for old cover... is there an excess etc? The item in question is a Laptop with a broken screen, I brought the laptop originally for around £700, do I get the money through the bank and do they have to receive the laptop and inspect it?

See what I was considering doing was getting a tower... I could probrably get better power for that sort of money...

I know the laptop is beyond repair, im on it now, except theres a rather large smile across the screen!
