When one counts dead pixels is it just a rule of thumb or is there a formula?

If as some members state they have a "blob" how can they determine exactly how many pixels make up the blob? It could be paragon shaped and would make counting difficult.

Obviously if one had a number of blobs, ranging from 1 (one) through to say 20 dead pixels it would make counting easier.

Does it happen that a customer counts his blob using the rule of thumb, states a number of dead pixels to the manufacturer, returns the monitor only to be told that he has counted incorrectly and has the monitor returned to him?

Sending a refurb monitor seems like a rip off to me, imagine buying a new car and discovering a major fault and being palmed off with a refurb!
