How does sound carry?

So I'm trying to be a good neighbour and not have my music too loud. I live in the end terrace of four and my speakers are on stands against the outside wall. I sit on my sofa which is about 2.5 metres away and behind that is a stud wall (downstairs loo behind it) with an internal door that leads into the hall area and the front door, next to it is the wall between me and the neighbour.

I've done the sound test of playing a record, going outside and I can hear very little, but my question is, what will the neighbour hear, bass, treble if any?

The speakers stand on carpet.

Btw they've told me to turn my music down before, but that was my wife upstairs playing music with the sub booming through the floor. :p

I remember my neighbours knocking on my door, many moons ago, complaining because the music had bounced their ornaments off their shelves :D

Could have the Mrs on the phone, put on your bounciest tunes, ask the neighbour if you can pop in and see what the music volume is like for their benefit...

Turn music up until you can hear it - Ask the neighbour what they are happy with...
Note the position of the volume control...

Then you know that around that level is fine?

EDIT - Shows you care to the neighbour too...

Maybe pop around to the neighbour's house and explain what you're doing? You can work out between you what might be too noisy.
