I was thinking about getting the 4850X2 to replace my aging 8800GT, and couldn't find much in the way of benchmarks, and want to know how it compares to the rest of today's cards?

Well, it's basically the 3rd fastest card available and a massive upgrade from an 8800GT.

GTX 295 > 4870x2 > 4850 x2

Yeah, it's good, but driver support is a little hit or miss. Also quite noisy and hot. But if you've got less than £300 to spend, it's a good deal.

Bought one a few weeks ago. Its superb, if a little noisy. Its quite an upgrade from my old 8800 ultra so should be a massive improvement from your GT. I can post a few benchmarks for you if you like. I've nothing for my ultra though

What about going with dual 4870s? I see one for about £150 on OCUK.

If you have an Xfire mobo... and a PSU with enough power.

Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2: Price and loudness reduced

Sapphire has officially reduced prices for its exclusive Ati Radeon HD 4850 X2 - currently there is no other manufacturer offering this dual CPU graphics card. The 2 GiByte version now costs 280 Euro, the 1 GiByte version 240 Euro. The price comparison of our German website confirms this information - however, there the cards are much lower priced than at the time of release.

Sapphire HD 4850 X2 now quieter
However, more exciting is the news that Sapphire now uses an improved fan control profile. This profile ensures that the Ati Radeon HD 4850 X2 cards will be much quieter during idle and 3D operation. After our tests this was definitely necessary since the 2 GiByte card reached up to 8 Sone during 3D operation. If the new BIOS will be available to all owners or only to new customers remains to be seen
. We stay in contact with Sapphire about that issue.

Background for Ati Radeon HD 4850 X2
Like the HD 4870 X2 the Radeon HD 4850 X2 uses two RV770 chips which communicate via the multi GPU technology Crossfire X. The cards measure respectable 28.5 centimeters - 1.5 cm more than the already long HD 4870 X2. The PLX chip, which is responsible for the communication of the GPUs, sits in the middle but has been rotated by 45 degrees. Furthermore the voltage supply is done with a sandwich cooling - a passive cooler sits on the back of the card's rear end.

The clock exactly matches the solo HD 4850: Both GPUs run with 625 MHz and the GDDR3-VRAM works with real 993 MHz.

main problem is drivers
Is AMD including drivers for teh HD4850X2 in the catalyst package or do you have to go to Sapphire

Well the 4850 is much better than the 8800, so two of them are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better.

OK, so these were run using the Clear Sky Benchmarking tool on the 'rate benchmark' option on the rig in my sig.

I can't find pics for the benchmarks I ran in warhead but I'd be happy to post the numbers if you interested.

To the OP, get one mate, I'm loving mine:D

EDIT: It a 2gb version. just noticed it doesn't say in my sig...

^^ Yeah I'm really chuffed with it. The low minimum's are a bit of a pain as you can sometimes notice them in game but I'm sure they will get better as the drivers mature

Right, well, I suppose I'll get one soon then.

As for getting 2 4870's I do have a crossfire motherboard, but not the power to comfortably run the two cards, so it would work out at like £450 which is a lot more than I've got access to at the moment.

Also I don't suppose anyone has any FSX benchmarks with the 4850X2?
