How does the Hudl compare to, say, a Nexus 7?

Hi All

I was planning on buying my wife an eReader for Christmas - originally my post here was going to be asking which I should aim for (feel free to answer that question instead!)

But seeing the Tesco Hudl, and hearing generally good things about it, I wonder whether there's any point in limiting her to a reader for the cost difference? It seems like once you decide you want to be able to read in the dark, eReaders aren't really any cheaper.

We have a Nexus 7 already as a family. How does the Hudl compare? Can it do all the same things out of the box?

Or, given that it's major use will be to read, am I barking up the wrong tree - is there a much cheaper eReader I should be aiming for instead? I use Calibre as my library, so required format doesn't matter.

I realise this is a little rambling - thanks for any help!

From the reviews I've seen it has a nice screen and speakers but is let down a bit by its slower processor. It should be able to do all the same things as the Nexus 7 but the Tegra chip in the Nexus 7 is a bit stronger. For reading it should be fine but if its just for reading something like a kindle might be better as they have a waaay better battery life and are easier on your eyes.

i +1 you on the kindle.

While it's true that most of the eReaders get into the same price territory as the Hudl once you want a backlight, I found (and I thought it was via this forum, so confused I don't see it here) that the Nook Glowlight version is only £49 in a couple of places. I think this might be because it's end of line stock.

Anyway, that's about the amount I really wanted to pay before I found I couldn't get what I wanted for it, so a Nook Glowlight it is.

Ah - I see what has confused me now.

This is the thread that I put in the wrong lounge because I'm an idiot. Some kind mod has moved it to the right place, but in the meantime I had posted a copy of the thread here myself when I realised my mistake.

So there are two versions of this here now. Sorry everyone. :o
