Just down the road
Hi guys,

I am looking to do an upgrade of my PC this week, as my current system is ancient now (AMD X2 3800, GeForce 7800, 2GB RAM)...

It has been a while and am not 100% on all the new technology, but I have come up with the spec below. I would like to spend no more than £700, a bit less would be better. I want to be able to play all the latest games on it (GTA IV definitely).

Can anyone make any improvements?

Thanks!

Grahame

Personally, everything looks great apart from motherboard.

I'd go for the 4870 1gb on TWO and buy yourself a better motherboard with the extra £50+. Maybe a touch slower in some games, but plays GTA perfectly!

I disagree. I'd save the money by buying the 4870 as OzZie suggests but I'd leave the board and spend the saving on getting the Phenom 940 instead. The unlocked mulitplier will make it easy to get more performance out of the chip and I see nothing wrong with the board you chose.

Thanks OzZie

Done a bit more tinkering and have come up with this. Saves 50 quid and allows me to get a phemon II and even if that board is not a true AM3 one, I can easily update in the future. Thanks for the tip on the gfx card, sounds perfect. Just as an aside, I do not overclock at all.

Look good? Will order today once I have it all just right

Yep, very good spec, can't argue with that. A quad may benefit you if you do things other than gaming, but that 720 is a great CPU and overclocks well.
