I understand that the multiplier is locked on these cpus.. so what ram would i need to get to say 3.6ghz+ on air? and stably.. i dont want crashes.

im thinking about building a system with £1,000 but i need to know what the best board is etc.. and are the E6600's the best clockers?.. does it matter about stepping? if so, how will i know which would be a good clocker? most sites dont tell you the stepping on the cpu before you buy.

also what HS/fan would be best?

At the moment the best boards are the Gigabyte DS3 and DS4 boards. Lots of people are getting good overclocks with the the conroes - especially the E6300s. I imagine the E6600 is a good clocker too.

I couldn't tell you the "best" RAM for overclocking, but I keep seeing G.Skill mentioned so that might be a good place to start looking.

What gskill exactly though?.. not the one that costs 300 odd quid?.. im after 2GB to go with it.

and is watercooling really a waste of time, stick to air cooling?

Nah, I dont mean the uber-expensive stuff. Just get what you can afford! The HZ PC-6400 stuff looks pretty good. :)

Watercooling isn't a waste of time. You get great temps, meaning you can usually push overclocks further - but not always - and it is quieter, since you dont need a fan running at such a high speed.

Never watercooled before so I couldn't tell you all the ins and outs etc. However it does look cool :D

I'm interested in knowing whether there's any o/c'ed E6700 results out there too...

Would the Giga DQ6 be just as good at overclocking these CPUs?

can anyone tell me how much i can expect out of the E6600?

im not looking forward to it as it has a locked multiplier, how high should that ram go?

Your Opty in your sig has a locked multi?? same as the 6600

daddyorchips - i might wanna buy it ;)

With high performance air cooling i.e. Tuniq 120, Scythe Ninja, Zalman LED you should easy get 444x9=4ghz dependant on the chip and mobo.

Answer the guys questions instead of going off on tangents ;)

G skill HZ 6400

I would go watercooling and have recently built a watercooling loop.
At high clocks the E6600' can get toasty with a bump in vcore.

Mine was reaching 70c when dual priming and that was with a zalman 9500 and nice air cooling in the case.I now get 48c full load dual prime and 28c idle temps.

I have heard that Gigabyte DS3 and DS4 have issues with high fsb with the E6600 but get good clocks on the lower conroes.

I've read elsewhere on the forum that people with expensive air cooling solutions are struggelling to get above 3.6ghz. Most are turning to water cooling it seems.

Do you run an E6600 @ 4ghz with air cooling? If not can you point me in the direction of someone who has. I'd love to know how to do it before I buy my kit.

4ghz is not easily achievable and especially on air.So answer the guys questions other than making sweeping statements that are inaccurate and will consquently lead to confusion.

Maddness,Devious and myself have all got conroes and believe me we are using watercooling for a good reason. ;)

this seems to happen almost every thread i make, but thanks for answers lol

Ok.. i need to know what watercooling setup to get.. and i dont want it to be really fiddly.. unless i should just stick to air cooling.

my mach II GT has been collecting dust since around october last year, i havent sent it to be fixed.. dont know why, but its chunky and i hate it.. Not to mention its a big pain just to attach it.

However id like to overclock a lot, while keeping temps good and noise to levels where you cant still hear it while you walk out of the room :p in other words, quiet.
