hi guys, firewire output seems to have died on my old Digital 8 camcorder and now I have no way of capturing my footage onto my PC for editing. Funds are really tight and cannot afford a replacement or any repairs at the moment so I need to find some other way of capturing in my action! Bearing in mind that Digital 8 is virtually extinct I tihnk it could be tough. Any ideas? Lets start saving for an FX-1!

If it has video out or s-video out you can plug that into a TV card with a video in input or s-video input and record it. One of these should do the job.

Couldn't you just buy a PCI Firewire card? You can get one for under a tenner.

EDIT: never mind, misread OP.

thanks for that - will check it out. Will this capture at the same quality as if i was using firewire?

On a camera old enough to still be using Digital8 I doubt the transfer method will affect the quality much. No offence meant.

Issue is not the PCI card it is the firewire output port on the camera itself, this clearly will not solve the issue.

This I feel is the only real option unless you can get hold of another camera that plays Digital 8 with a functioning firewire output just to allow you to transfer the video to your PC.

lol, none taken - it was a real decent camera in its time and still produces a real good image but just the way things are going now its turned into a dinosaur as far as camcorders go. Will have to give the S-video out a try like posters above suggested.
