Ive overclocked my cpu from 3.2 to 3.8 (amd 955 3.2 stock) for gaming. When i run the stress test the temps get around 65c+ (in the dangerous area)... but when i play games they NEVER come anywhere near that so should i bet worried? the highest ive ever seen it go was about 55c (it was BOILING hot weather at the time) while playing champions online & bad company 2 (all on max)

Prime95 is the ultimate stress test. If your machine runs this over a reasonable period of time, then it is unlikely that your hardware will fall over.

Put simply; it is the ultimate stress test. On here it is done mainly to prove the point, but I have found that I can put up with the odd hang after playing for a few hours with a higher clock than Prime95 would allow as a 'stable clock'.

All games are different however and the exact opposite could also be argued: that in order for all games to work you need to pass the Prime95 test lol

Go figure! At the end of the day if you're happy with the stability in games there is no need to subject your system to the torture that Prime95 subjects your system to :)

Heat wise Intel Burn Test is actually the 'ultimate stress test'. You can normally knock about 10C off the Prime temps and you'll get a rough idea of the max gaming temps. What's your cooling btw? Should be possible to keep Phenom quads to around 60C running prime unless your ambient temp is something like 35C.

Corsair h50. IT gets upto around 65C at 3.8Ghz.

I do have to swap the fans around tho as i have air pumping from the back into the case (so the heat thats rising form the gpu gets sucked in, through the rad and back into the case.. -_- ) My orignal set up, had cold air pumping from out side the hosue through an air duct straight into the fan/rad lol but i have since moved the computer room around and thats no longer possible :(

In the summer its idle temps sit around 42-47 while in the winter it can hit 32-35c :D

47 idle?! Jesus how hot is your room?

-_- you have NO idea lmao. Its on the side of the house where the sun beats allday and we have some dodgey brick work. It seems to store the heat and makes the room hot ALL night -_-... Plus... (i know it soudns GAY) .. but i am scared s less of spiders lmao. This time of the year i like to keep the windows closed as spiders make there way in this time of the year -_-

Worst F'in nightmare >< lol

Evil spider is going to get you. :D Was that one you found in your garage? Sounds a bit like my girlfriends bedroom, turns into a sauna without the fan on and the window open during the summer. Guess that would explain the 65C prime temps too.

Lol luckily there only is aussie. I have allways beens cared of them, but a few years back, i came into my bedroom and sat down to start typeing. As i put my hands on the keyboard i felt something..looked down.. a f'in HUGE spider a hand span was on my keyboard! Now i am deathly freaked by them lol UGH.

Yeah :( When i had my old setup (like said above)

[really crappy pic, it was in the early stages lol]

The top pipe would pump in cold air from outside and the bottom pipe pumped out heat from the gpu. ...(both pipes had stockings put over the ends. Mainly to stop dust from pumping in....and to stop spiders crawling in.. ><

Temps would fall to 25 in dead of the UK winter nights. Since i have removed the duct temps have sored. Even in prime 95 after 24 hours temps were sitting around 55-60c:(

p.s ...i really miss that case :( i have antex 1200 now and its damn ugly :'(. Its just a shame that case inside was too small for a 5870 lol

I agree that Intel burn test is the Heat test. It tests your heatsink and gives you a quick test to see if your way out. It scares me up to '78 the year of my birth.

I like prime for the different tests though, and sometime I find I can pass the intel burn tests fine, but fail prime large or blend.

The joy and the fear is still creeping into the lounge in the morning, turning on the screen and praying that prime is running green

re:

Not found that to be the case from my personal experience.

I have been running IBT over the past few days and get temps of around 78 on load but prime hits at least 10c more:eek:

Cheers

Very few games use more than 4 cores, i think the only game i have that does is supreme commander. The fewer cores a game uses the lower your temps will be. Your unlikely to ever see temperatures like you get when running IBT/prime95 in day to day use. The only program i use that comes close is something like Handbrake when im transcoding video files.

Thats pretty genius :) I've always considered doing something like this with my desktop cos it gets bloody hot in here :(

Did you just use tumble dryer vent hoses?

yep! I also painted it with poster paint (to match the colour of the case) Its suprising how cooler it makes the room when gaming!
All i used was:
a PVC air duct from ebay.
A fan converter 120mm to 80mm
some vip ties to fix it into place
and a pair of stockings (or something similer to put on the end you stick out the window)

and for the gpu pipe

an airduct and a pair of stockings. I never really had to fix it to the gpu as it sat nicely over the air vent on the gpu it self. Worked amazingly well!

back onto subject :D
Ive tryed AMd overdrive today for 12 hours and it wasnt crashed and hasnt gone above 61c soo im hoping prime95 is just going a bit too far! ty for ur advice and stuff :D
