Specs:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16Ghz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R
CPU Cooler: Akasa AK-961 CPU Cooler
Case: Antec 900

How far could I safely overclock this to? And can you point me towards a guide on the actual overclocking process please. :)

Read the stickies :)

Keep temps under 70c nearer 60c prefered and voltage at 1.4v or 1.45v if you feel a bity daring :)

Should do 4Ghz easily and nearer 4.5GHz if a EO stepping.

4ghz should be your first aim! That was mine and it was my first time ocíng too. Theres a guide at the top of this forum section.

As far as I can tell with these 45nm chips on air it's the temps that dictate the overclock, my 8400 (EO) is showing no signs of stress at 4.5ghz at 1.4v, ram loosened and the tiniest lift in Northbridge volts.
However it idles at 55 degrees and I daren't run Prime95 for more than a few minutes as it dives through the high sixties with alarming speed.
If you're on more overclock friendly air than my AC super 7 or preferably water, only then can you see it's actual limits. As it stands, how far you can push it is how much temp your system builds up.
