How far can I go?

Motherboard: Asus P5B Wi-Fi Delux AP
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz
Cooler: Freezer 7 Pro
RAM: OCZ Platinum DDR2 4GB
Case: Jeantech Phong 2 with open vents on the side and fans front and rear

I've tried to overclock with the Asus AI Suite software and got up to 3.1GHz this afternoon but it isn't stable and this evening won't even sustain 2.6GHz for long. None of the temperature reports goes over 40oC either the RAM or the CPU. I've tried increasing the CPU frequency and leaving the multiplier at 9 with the Asus AI Booster but after a while the computer locks and the speakers squeal so I have to power down and go back to stock settings. Using the Asus AI N.O.S. software I can get a 7% boost at high demand, but it won't boot at anything higher than that. When I put this all together it was based on recommendations in the various magazines as to what would be good for overclocking without spending silly money and the theroetical max for my CPU I'm told is 3.8GHz, but I don't expect to get anywhere near that without spending a lot more on cooling. As it is my CPU ususally runs between 35oC up to 40oC, as does that RAM so I think my cooling should be good enough to get more out of the system.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or offer any advice on how to safely ramp up the performance closer to 3GHz?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Overclock manually. I have my E6600 on a Gigabyte 965p-ds3 and get 3.4 Ghz. Been running stable for over a year and a half.

Ignore these AI boosters and all that rubbish. I run mine at an 8x Multiplier and 425 FSB. Cannot remember the voltage, but under a tuniq tower it maxes out at 65 Degrees on the hardest stress I can manage (In RL it never goes that high).

Start slowly. It took me a couple of weeks to get this clock.

I can find all my exact settings if it helps.

Manually?! That's where I am going to need some more advice, you see it's a bit of a black art to me! I'm not sure what to do in the BIOS setup and how do I raise the CPU speed without putting the RAM at risk? Should I reduce the RAM speed before ramping up the FSB? I'm worried about making a large paper weight! My wife would go spare, since I've just spent £110 on a GTX260 X2. If I kill any more components the next entry on here will be my obituary!

Thanks for this. Is there any chance you can tell me your settings? That would help to have something to aim for. From your post above it sounds like that way to go is with a higher CPU frequency and a lower multiplier, is that right?

Just to let you know, I'm now running at 2.798GHz 311MHz X 9 temps are 37 Oc CPU and 38 Oc RAM. CPU fan is only turning at 1400rpm, so a long way to go to reach the limits. The CPU temp went up to 49 Oc after about an hour of Prime 95. Dare I go higher?

I'm going to attempt to manually overclock for the first time (I tried using the automatic overclock in the past and it never seemed to work very well).

I'll be reading and following the steps in the overclock thread, but since I have a Asus P5B with a Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 (GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz) I thought I'd ask if you (or anyone else with this motherboard) have any good starter tips for how to proceed?

Thanks

you could go up to 3ghz tops for stable i think.

i have my e8200 at 3.2ghz 8x400 1600fsb(400x4)

i have had it up to 3.6ghz 8x450 1800fsb(450x4) (this was unstable)

i don't think it is the chip that stops it.. it is more the limits on the FSB and the memory, cause the ram is oced when you oc the cpu. i can run my corsair at 1125 but it keep it at about 1066-1080

my temps at 3.2ghz are 40 on idle and 50 on peak

i have noctura hsf though :D the good one

You overclock your RAM separately or is that just an increase from overcloking the CPU? And is that 800 RAM you have like me?

PS! Have a Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B CPU Cooler and roomy tower so should be ok with temps.

it all works off the multiplier on my m/b. but some m/b do offer separate OC options.

but mine all works off the multiplier and frequency, 8x400

it does offer an option to change the bus speed of the ram and that works off a ratio, i put that so that it is on 400mhz bus with the tightess ratio.

then when i change the frequency it increases the ram speed.

i have corsair dominator ddr2 1066 4gb

i recommend getting lavalys everest and running the memory and cpu benchmarks on the different oc that you find. as you can have your cpu running at 4ghz but have a bad fsb and memory timings and the whole thing is worst than the default if you don't know what you are doing.

what is also recommend is if you don't keep changing the OC. spend one day messing with it and then once you have a stable one, keep with that for months and months, don't spend a few weeks changing it every day, messing with it, cause that i think is gonna put wear on to the little chip.

I overclocked mine in 2 weeks. Stability testing for 2 hours, move FSB up 10mhz, test, move fsb until it was unstable. Then added a bit more voltage and started again.

Make sure you write down ALL of the settings! That way when it goes pear shaped and resets the BIOS (or you have to manually reset) you still have somewhere to start from!

I would clock it until you find speeds/temps you are hapy with, then no need to change again! (Unless you get water or extreme air cooling).

Once I was happy, I fully loaded it with prime and left it for 12 hours. All was good!

hey dude, I have the P5b Deluxe, with e6600. I also have a guide I found online, so i'll pm the address to you as its on *shock* another forum! Just gotta figure out how to pm...

Yes, I can't see any way to pm either and such a guide would be quite useful. I'll google for it.
