How far can you reasonably commute by car?

Quick survey, how far do you reckon you could travel each morning without going insane.

A new job I might be going for would mean close to 50 miles (mixture of motorways and A roads) each way. I reckon that'd be about an hour, which is what I currently do on the train, which WILL shortly drive me insane.

I did 50 miles each way every day for 18 months.

Could've gone further, but by 18 months I was a bit fed up.

My dad travels around 30 miles to get to where he works. He'd probably go further too. Having said that he gets x amount of money per mile to cover petrol and general wear and tear and since my dad drives quite economically and is a dab hand at fixing cars, he turns up a small profit :D

I travel about 20miles each way and takes about 45minutes and drove me insane after a week. I would rather an hour on the train than half an hour in a car as you can do other stuff and relax.

cant you get the train then?

i am hoping to get a job in london, which would require a 1 hr commute by train each way.

i think its acceptable because i can read during the journey.

commuting by car is complete nightmare imo

i drive about 6 miles each day.. And that annoys me because its SOLID with traffic so takes like 30mins Not bad for 3 miles :(

You might well be quicker cycling although I don't know if the conditions would permit you to. :)

As for the original question, I'd probably consider travelling up to an hour into work each day (however far that could get me as I'd measure by time taken rather than distance since 4 miles in Edinburgh traffic might take the same as 30 in the surrounding area), any longer than that and I'd look for either a job or a house that was closer as it rapidly would become a waste of my time and simply not worthwhile.

I used to a commute of slightly less than half an hour in the car.
Now I've changed jobs I have an hour commute by train and tube and I absolutely hate it after veing able to drive to work.

The car is so much more civilised that the train, I really dislike commuting on public transport.

I commute into London by train at the moment, which is an hour each way. Don't expect a seat. Don't expect room to stand. Expect to pay through the nose. Expect the train to stink of ****. Expect delays of over an hour. Expect hell.

I'm at the start of the line, so gauranteed seat on the way up. :)

Plus ive got a little trick to get a seat on the way home. :D

obviously no seats at rush hour on the underground.

Sure its expensive, about £18 I think, unless you buy a monthly ticket.

its not so much the distance but the time it takes, i used to work in Telford (25 miles away) as did my missus.

I would have to leave work 30 mins early to get to her hopefully by 5pm, i had to work through dinner to make the time up. Now she worked near the town centre and i worked less than half a mile away.

It could take upto 40 mins to get to her work, and then 30 mins to get home.

crazy!

PS: Im sure i saw a program advertised last night about a man that commutes 500 miles each way and has to fly, obviously in a jet as his arms would get awful tired :)

I did an hour commute (about 35 miles) for 6 months, that wasn't fun but i could have continued given different circumstances.

I use to drive about 20 miles to work every day, that took about 30mins and use to be really enjoyable but I wouldn't have wanted to drive for any longer, I actually miss my daily drive a little bit. (All back roads)

Now work 2 miles away and I'm at work by in the time it's taken me to find a decent song on the radio, which has its advantages mind.

So for the OP, would say about 30mins drive would be the most I would like to do for work.

Takes me an hour to drive 12 miles to uni for 9am luckily nly do that 2 days a week other days takes me 30minutes. Don't mind about distance but wouldnt want to drive for much longer that an hour to work.
