How far is too far from TV?

This might sound like a silly question, but at the minute I sit around 2.6m from my 50" TV and it's a good distance. The house I'm moving to is much longer and the TV can only really go in one place as there is already a ton of wiring half way up the wall for mounting.

Any ideas/suggestions? The top wall has a double door for access to the garden with full height windows either side. Could bring the sofa forward but might look weird? Left sofa is three seater, bottom is two.

Cheers!

Move the couch closer?

How far? Wouldn't it look odd in the middle of the floor? What to do with the space behind it?

How about adding a projector?

That was the back-up idea, but means moving all of the wiring to the roof for the projector. Plus, if you just want to flick the TV on that is a lot of effort.

Get a 65" TV :)

Are you offering to buy one for me? :p

Another alternative I was thinking was buying a big bean bag and throwing it in the understairs cupboard when we need it out of the way.

I think the easy answer is projector /buy a bigger TV. I sit circa 3m away from a 55" and it could be bigger!

(for what it's worth, it's a large room so wouldn't look too chavvy..)

no such thing as too far away IMO.

you will have people spout on about how the further you sit and the smaller the screen that it's pointless having anything other than a 720P tv.

however i can from 10 feet away see the difference in 4k content on a 43" tv.

i have a 50" tv in the bedroom where i am approx 8 feet away and a 55" in the games room where i am approx 6 feet away.

so as my tv's get smaller from room to room, i'm actually further away from the screen in terms of distance. it's just what suits my rooms and setups. there is no hard fast rule. forget what anyone else says and just do what you want.

my mate has a 55" and his room is very large. i think you sit approx 12-15 feet away from it. it's a huge room though and the 55" looks tiny in it. however it works for them as 55" is actually quite big and it would look stupid if they moved the sofas closer.

Im sat about 3.5 metres away from my 60 inch and i wish it was a little bigger for gaming on. TV watching is fine altho the mrs thought it was a bit big when it replace the 46 inch but now shes got used to it. Are projectors able to replace a tv or do they not last as long and still require the room to be dark?

I sit 4.5metres from a 42" TV. It's a little small as developers are increasingly targeting larger screens so UI text size is decreasing.....but it's a minor inconvenience rather than a big problem tbh.

Dude you're on a tech forum, nothing is a lot of effort with some ingenuity! :p

I used to have a 50" TV & a Projector "hybrid" style setup. With an electronic drop down screen. All of this bundled in with a harmony remote meant with the press of ONE button it would switch the tv off, turn the projector on and drop the screen. Hey presto!

That distance would have to be a projector for me. Running cables is an afternoons work. Once it's done you never have to touch it again.

not really harmony style remote and motorised screen (can be had for like £50 and upwards on ebay, no idea on quality though). go with projector, even 65" is to small for that distance, plus the price of massive tvs.
at the moment THX recommendations for 50" tv is 5.6 and maximum thx recommended distance 7.9, basically half the distance in the new lounge.
120" projector on the other hand, is the perfect THX viewing distance.

as for cabling, if you are buying, then just do the work, that way you can do all the speaker cabling as well for surround sound and get it all nicely hidden.

Personal preference when it comes to distance, if anything its the height of the TV i would make sure is correct.
